I am sure that more Ellie’s will be popping up in 2015.

Presentation:  Patricia King presented a Signature Quilt to Carolyn Burgess at our November meeting with these words:

To: Carolyn, a friend and fellow quilter, we love and cherish the  time we spend together.  I could not  think of no better tribute to make to you, than  to use your own words.

“Often we don’t say things because we always think we have time to say them.  Then after that someone is gone we think specifically about that person and think of so many things we could have, should have or would have said.  We’re going to say them now while we’re all here and can benefit from the words.”

Carolyn was so surprised she did not even no we were even presenting the quilt to her.

Family Day 2014–Quilts In The Gym

20140621_103949-PANO
Because of the off and on rain last Saturday, we had to improvise by hanging the quilts in the Gym of North Michigan Park Recreation Center for this years Family Day.  Although it was a challenge, the Wee Bee Quilters won this challenge of hanging quilts the best way we could.
As you can see below we had them even hanging off the bleachers.

I was so busy working the small grill outside, that I did not get as many pictures as I would have liked with all the girls in the gym.  We had a surprise visit from our long lost sister Nadine Mills (did not get a picture of her).  She here for a month or two, we miss Debbra Murphy who is back in California.
I got a surprise from my father.

When I told him some of is McDonald friends were at the Family Day is showed up.  It was nice seeing him there.  He lives right down the street from me and see him every Sunday, but I really have not hung out with my dad in sometime.  Great to see him coming out.

If any of you Wee Bee Quilts out there have any inside photos of Family Day, please post them on our site.
See you next month.

April News Letter–What’s Happening At The Bee

Great things were happening at the Bee last month announcements, visit from a past member, welcome make to the fold of a MIA member, and a bag class from one of our own.  So let us recap for last month.

20140426_124216

Who is that you say?  It is Mia Baker, one of our long time members who stop by to say hello.  She still has her Wee Bee Quilters shirt.  It was nice to see her again, and hope she will stop by again.

IMAG0016

Well, there is no help for this blurry picture of Valerie Crawford, using a unknown camera, should have use the cell phone.  Anyway, we would like to welcome back to the fold the MIA member Val.  She has been working weekends, and was not able to attend the meetings, but always paid her dues.  We are glad she is off the weekend shift and able to join us again.

IMAG0021

Another blurry picture of Rene Bailey who stop by to present a quilt to Carolyn Burgess for her contribution to the UHURH Quilters Guild.  Sorry no picture of the quilt still have camera problems.  May be someone took a picture and will send it to me for the end of year photo gallery.

Here is Lynora Williams, the BEE gave her a gift card to congratulate her for receiving her  Master of Science Degree in Library & Information Science.

Below is some of the Red/White quilts that were done for a show, I think was 2 years ago.  We are hoping to display these quilts in Columbus, Ohio at a one day church exhibit around July.  If you have anything red/white you would like to send, please contact Carolyn Burgess.

I was having camera trouble and was taking pictures with my cell phone.  These are some of the blocks from our 10th Anniversary swap.  You can see more of them on Linda’s blog, just click on her name.  Everyone rushed home to figure out how they will put their anniversary blocks together.  I myself went home and cut them down to size, and have not looked at them since.  But, I have been making myself crazy by trying to find the right fabric color to use for sashing.

Yetude (Sandra Ealy) gave a class on this fun little bag.  She originally made this bag to carry her yarn in, but it is great for anything you want to use it for.  It was originally small put she blow up the pattern to make a medium and large bag.  She is with Lezetta giving her some tips of putting it together.

These little bags were made by Shirley Royal, to hold our utensils (forks, knives and spoons).  She got this idea from one of the UHURU Guild members and remembered how to do it and just made it.  Great member and great bags.  I see another class in the work for this.

Last is some pictures of show-n-tell.

This could be a picture of the quilt present to Carolyn, but not sure.

Well, that is all for now.  See you this weekend.

Wee Bee January Newsletter

The beginning of a New Year of quilting, eating and sharing our work.  We had a great showing of Wee Bee Members for our first meeting in January.  The little snow that we had did not keep us home, we needed the warmth of our fellow quilters for new ideas and just catching up with each other.

Minutes of Meeting:

  • Treasury report was given by CC Flower (amount not disclosed in this newsletter).
  • Dues this year is $20.00 collected by Lynora.  All dues are to be paid by our next meeting in February.
  • Voted on the terms of Office for Committees, which will be 2 years.
  • No Challenge Project this year.  The 10th Anniversary of Wee Bee Quilters Block Exchange will be substituted for this year. We have full participation, YAH!!!  (More on this in newsletter).
  • Looking for workshop ideas for this year.  First workshop this February will be given by Sandy Hassan (more on this in newsletter).
  • We are still discussing a Service Project for this year.  Suggested venues:  St. Ann’s and Hospital for Sick Children.  If you have others please bring your ideas to the next meeting.

Have I forgotten anything?  Well if I have you will hear about it in the next newsletter.  So on with the activities of the day.

Show & Tell

Carolyn Burgess had an Epiphany for 2014 with this lovely quilt Epiphany/Clothesline quilt that she made.  On the Clothesline at the top and bottom of this quilt are words of resolutions, revelations, friendship and being closer to God.

SAM_2957Charlene shows off her Potato Chip bags that she worked on for the ladies at the Center that she and Pat go to and teach quilting.   Great bags Charlene we can’t wait to make one ourselves.SAM_2958

Look at what CC has made.  A very large clothesline basket/bowl from the workshop that Sandy taught.SAM_2951

Gwen has been also working of the holidays.  She has been making these lovely trivets/mug rugs from the designs of her ever loving Christmas ornaments along with one of her dolls.

What is show-n-tell without the wonderful works of our sister Yetude (Sandra Ealy), with her face of South African leader Nelson Mandela.

SAM_2952 Linda is showing us ideas for our 10th Anniversary Exchange Blocks.  You do not have to have 10 things on the 12 1/2” block you can do one item, just as long as you have the number 10 on it.  This show-n-tell was great and made it much easier for us to change our mines on what we will be doing for the exchange.  Have you started yet?

Celebrity News

SAndy hassan

Sorry for the fussy picture, but our own Sandy Hassan is a celebrity in her own right.  With the beautiful quilts that she have created over the years are now on display at the Hill Center Galleries until Mach 2, 2014.  They are not only on display, she is selling them too.  She tells us that this is a great opportunity to get our work out there for others to see.   So if you have not seen them please take the time to visit the Hill Center Galleries located at the Old Naval Hospital, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

February Work Shop

100_1566

Sandy will also be doing our workshop this February on how she makes this lovely Crescent Moon Quilt.  I think this will be more of a demonstration then a class, put bring some scrap fabric and different size top lends.

Bus Trips

UHURU Quilters Guild are going to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival – March 1, 2014 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, Hampton, VA.  Price is $60.00 for transportation and ticket into the show.  Leaving at 7:00 am from 6009 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745.  Contact Trammie Morrow at tammietrekkie@yahoo.com to see if there are any available space.

Sight & Sound Theater presents Moses.  This trip is sponsored by Friends of Marwood, which Charlene’s sister June Rhinehart is a part of.  If you have never been to the Sight & Sound Theater, then this is a really great treat for you.  Tickets are $105 and that is cheap because you will have a fabulous dinner at Shady Maple Smorgasboard.  Charlene passed out flyers on this trip and also e-mail them if you need more details.   Trip is May 8, 2014.

SO, that is it for now.  Please bring any correction to my attention, although there is nothing I can do about, since I have already sent this out to everyone.

Have a great Quilting Day and enjoy the snow in, because those of us who still work for a living will have to go out in this stuff tomorrow if they do not close down the Government or Schools.
